As a form of commitment to environmental conservation and service to coastal communities, lecturers and students of Medan Area University (UMA) carried out the planting of 1,000 mangrove seedlings in the coastal area of ​​Sicanang Island, Belawan, Medan City, on Saturday, July 5, 2025.

This activity is part of UMA’s regular community service and environmental education program. Mangrove planting aims to strengthen coastal ecosystems, prevent abrasion, and raise public awareness of the importance of environmental protection.

In his remarks, UMA lecturer representative Saipul Sihotang, S. Si, M. Biotek said that student involvement in this activity is part of the learning process outside the classroom which not only strengthens social and ecological awareness, but also builds leadership character and environmental responsibility.

“The planting of 1,000 mangrove seedlings is a tangible contribution from the UMA academic community to preserving coastal ecosystems. We hope this will be the first step towards similar, sustainable activities,” said one of the lecturers organizing the activity.

Students from the Faculty of Agriculture enthusiastically participated, working together to plant mangrove seedlings along the coastline of Sicanang Island. In addition to planting, the activity also included education about the importance of mangrove forests in maintaining marine biodiversity, mitigating climate change, and providing livelihoods for coastal communities.
