Rector Speech
Universitas Medan Area is currently continuously adapting to current conditions and the latest developments in information and communication technology in carrying out its learning and educational activities.
The directives and expectations of President Prabowo Subianto are very clear, stating that universities must be able to adapt quickly so that they can contribute optimally to solving real problems in society.
In relation to the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, UMA identifies four important points:
a. The need for greater campus autonomy, which aligns with the President’s direction that independence must begin with imagination and the courage to pursue new things beyond conventional norms.
b. UMA prioritizes character and cultural education, which is a key element in higher education and is synergistic with the national movement for mental revolution.
c. UMA establishes collaborations with the Business World, Industrial World, and Professional Work Environment through internships, research, community service, and the exchange of experts and practitioners.
d. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology encourages universities to strengthen their adaptability to change, generate direct impact on society, and meet global higher education standards.
e. The MBKM program is a revolutionary movement that encourages students to gain opportunities and rights to learn outside their study program and off-campus by choosing one of the eight available MBKM programs.
Currently, university performance is assessed through its Key Performance Indicators, which include:
Graduates securing decent employment.
Students gaining off-campus experience.
Lecturers engaging in activities outside the campus.
Practitioners teaching within the campus.
Lecturer outputs utilized by society.
Study programs collaborating with world-class partners.
Collaborative and participatory classes.
Internationally standardized study programs.
Implementation of the “three educational sins” regulation (anti-intolerance, anti-sexual violence, anti-bullying) and anti-corruption measures.
Furthermore, UMA must comply with standards in its management in accordance with the Ministry Regulation (Permendikbudristek) No. 53 of 2023 on Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
Therefore, one example of the established standard is that by 2025, a minimum of 75% of UMA lecturers must hold a Doctoral degree with the academic rank of Associate Professor.
Students are required to achieve accomplishments in various fields according to their talents through competitions at the regional, national, and international levels. Students are also obligated to produce written works published in national or international journals. Graduates are expected not only to be accepted into the workforce but also to pursue further education at higher levels.
UMA must also achieve recognition in university rankings at both the national and international levels, as it has consistently done over the years.
