Lecturers from various scientific fields at Medan Area University (UMA), together with 5th semester Communication Science Study Program students, held a workshop and outreach.
This event aims to raise awareness about the importance of food nutrition and sustainable agriculture through the theme “Plant Yourself, Be Healthy Yourself” , which took place on Wednesday (7/11) in Rambai Village, STM Hilir District, Deliserdang Regency, North Sumatra.

Agnita Yolanda, B.Comm., M.Sc., a lecturer in Communication Studies at UMA, explained in Medan on Friday (December 27) that malnutrition remains a major challenge in Indonesia. “There are approximately 23 million Indonesians who cannot meet their daily nutritional needs,” she said.
In addition, he highlighted other health challenges, such as stunting, obesity, and congenital diseases due to unhealthy diets.

Another UMA lecturer, Khairunnisah Lubis, S.Sos., MIPol., added that sustainable agriculture is a potential solution to address this issue. “Sustainable rural agriculture not only provides fresh, local food but also improves air quality and creates green spaces that support the health and well-being of rural communities,” she explained.

Khairunnisah also explained that sustainable agricultural systems aim to reduce environmental impacts, maintain productivity, increase farmer incomes, and improve the quality of life for rural communities. “This activity aims to encourage the development of local agriculture to become more advanced and independent,” she added.

The focus of this activity is to revitalize agricultural activities in Rambai Village through a participatory approach involving the local community and local government in decision-making and program implementation. Saipul Sitohang Sibuea, SP., M.Si., and Indra Hermawan, ST., MT., also participated in this activity.
